The tan has faded. The spots, sadly, have not. By mid-October, the traces of summer often start to show. As your tan fades, it leaves behind spots that were well hidden in August. You may recognise some from last year; others are new.

We think freckles are beautiful, so they are welcome to stay. Irregular pigmentation can be beautiful too! This newsletter is about unwanted hyperpigmentation.
Can these spots be treated? Yes. In our Lab, we see time and again that the right steps can noticeably reduce them. This will not happen on its own, though, and we would rather tell you that up front.
A pigmentation spot forms when your skin produces too much melanin, its own pigment, in one area. Some triggers come from outside, above all the sun, with its UV radiation and visible light. Others come from within: inflammation, for example after a blemish; hormones, for instance during pregnancy or from contraceptive pills; our genes. [1, 2, 3]

You can protect yourself from the sun and calm inflammation. Your hormones and genes, however, are largely beyond your control. That is exactly why unwanted hyperpigmentation is so hard to treat and so often comes back. [1]Melasma is especially stubborn. It appears as larger patches of discolouration, often on the forehead, cheeks and upper lip. Melasma is a chronic condition: even after we have successfully reduced it one year, it can return with the next summer sun. [1, 2]
Still, you do not have to live with unwanted spots. Our medical team has developed our proprietary treatment pathway for them, evidence-based and in line with the latest research.
Many treatments only target the spots you can already see. While that is important, it is often not enough on its own. Treat only today’s spots, and next year there will be new ones. That is why our approach has three parts:
The foundation: a tinted sunscreen with iron oxides, every morning. The pigments in the sunscreen also block visible light. Add to that active ingredients that slow down pigment production. [1, 4] This routine is your companion every day. As much as we love seeing you at everskin, most days you have to manage without us… which makes this step essential!
Here, we can target two layers of the skin. Medical-grade peels renew the skin’s surface. Our Biorevitalisation treatment is designed to act in the deeper layers of the skin and leaves the top layer largely undisturbed. [5] Both can help lighten spots and create a more even skin tone. [1, 5]

With melasma in particular, the work does not stop when treatment ends. Regular maintenance helps prevent relapses. [1] We support you throughout the year and adjust your plan as your skin evolves.
Our Skin Analysis enables you and us to see more than we can in just the mirror. With UV imaging, we can also see pigment that is still hidden beneath the surface. Based on the results, we create a plan together with you, both for at-home care as well as for treatments. From November, we have appointments available again in Zürich.
To your Skin’s Longevity,
Your everskin team
